The 4th of July marks the day in 1776 when the Continental Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence, a bold document that announced the thirteen American colonies were breaking away from British rule. Drafted by Thomas Jefferson and revised by a group including John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, the Declaration laid out powerful ideas about liberty, equality, and the right to self-government. Though the Revolutionary War was already underway, this moment made it clear: the colonies were united in their fight for freedom.

As we get closer to the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution in 2026, this year’s celebration feels even more meaningful. Declaring independence wasn’t easy—it took courage and sacrifice from people all across the colonies. Even though Plainsboro wasn’t officially a township until 1919, families with familiar names like Applegate, Dey, Davison, and Wyckoff lived in the area and played roles in the early American story.

Here at the Wicoff House Museum, we’re already planning events to celebrate the 250th anniversary. From exhibits and lectures to community programs, we’re looking forward to highlighting our town’s connection to this important history.

As you enjoy this Independence Day, take a moment to remember the people who helped build the foundation of our country and our community. Their stories still matter today. sdmfb,msdfnnmsdw:nnU>63RG?s
